Some of us had this bad feeling… iPhone wanted live video for his own AR app.
“the portable electronic device can allow the user to select a mode based on the types of objects that the user wants to identify. Based on the selected mode, the portable electronic device can adjust parameters used for searching an identification database. For example, if the user selects to identify an object in a “MUSEUM” mode, the portable electronic device can search the identification database for objects that are commonly found in a museum. In some embodiments, the portable electronic device can determine the location of the user to help identify an object. For example, if the user is determined to be in Las Vegas and the portable electronic device is set to a “RESTAURANT” mode, the device can limit the search of the identification database to restaurants in Las Vegas.”
That’s a part of the patent Apple have registered. Since the patent doesn’t say “Augmented reality” or such keywords, we can’t say directly that they just borrow our hopes.
BUT, just by recognition of a symbol in a space, tracking it, and overlaying virtual objects/information into it you can formerly say you’re talking about Augmented Reality.
I’ll write you down a piece of abstract from the Patent if you still have any hope…
“Systems and methods for identifying an object and presenting additional information about the identified object are provided.”
cheers… (?)
Which will be our part of the game in AR devices? Will we only (which is not that bad) have access to the rest of smartphones market? Will they unify efforts to fight iPhone ARwirdget?
What ever will be, will be.
